In a Climate Quest, the Roof as White Knight
Since he took over as energy secretary last year, Steven Chu, a Nobel laureate in physics, has urged Americans to help cool the planet by painting their roofs a lighter color that reflects sunlight. read more...
Having White Roofs Could Save U.S (Much Needed) $735 Million Per Year
Since being appointed as the Secretary of Energy, Dr. Steven Chu has been talking all about the benefits of white roofs. Now he’s going to put his own department where his mouth is by mandating that all new roofs on Energy Department buildings be either white or reflective. In his statement this week he noted the cooling effect that white roofs have on buildings — especially air-conditioned ones — as well as their ability to drastically lower energy costs – $735 million per year to be exact, if 85% of all air-conditioned buildings in the US had white roofs. With all the crises that have been going down lately, we could really use that moolah!!!;Read more: Having White Roofs Would Save the U.S. $735 Million per Year | Inhabitat - Green Design Will Save the World read more...
Reflecting On White Coatings
Washington, DC (August 14, 2009) – Energy Efficiency proponents and regulators need to discard the outdated idea that white is the only color for a “cool” roof, and recognize that many of the newer high-reflectivity aluminum and colored roof coatings can perform just as well or better than white, says the Roof Coatings Manufacturers Association (RCMA). read more...

Why Cool Roofs Are Way Cool
A cool roof reflects and emits the sun’s energy as light back to the sky instead of allowing it to enter the building below as heat. In many climate zones, a cool roof can substantially reduce the cooling load of the building, providing several direct benefits to the building owner and occupants: read more...
Study: White Roofs Could Curb Climate Change
If the world's 100 biggest cities were to whiten the roofs of all of their buildings and use more reflective pavement, the global cooling effect would be huge, a new study has concluded. read more...
Coatings Keep Things Cool
Few people doubt the value of using sunscreen to protect against sunburns and skin-damaging ultraviolet rays. Now a wide range of products are available that essentially act as sunscreens for roofing systems. As legislators, architects and building owners embrace the idea that building design has a huge impact on energy consumption and sustainability, increasingly they are recognizing that white coatings offer big benefits with few drawbacks. read more...
Title 24 Blueprint: California Building Energy Efficiency Standards
The 2005 Standards’ cool roof requirements apply to roofs on conditioned (heated or cooled);nonresidential buildings that have low-sloped roofs (2:12 or less). The requirements apply to roofs on newly;constructed buildings and to most reroofs on existing buildings. A list of building types to which the cool roof;requirements apply and a list of exempt building types are included at the end of these questions and answers;on page 9 and 10. read more...
